Bang in het donker (Afraid of the dark)

Story I wrote, illustrated, printed and bound about street intimidation and feeling unsafe at night. In the story, the protagonist wishes she had a big dog to protect her, the dog being a metaphor for the feeling of safety and security. I made this zine during my study Illustration at Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Through an iterative process of writing lessons, feedback from teachers and students and revisions, I was able to make my own 12-page book from scratch.

Ik wou dat ik een grote enge hond had
Die tijdens het uitgaan opgevouwen in mijn tas past
Die ik er ‘s nachts onderweg naar huis bij pak
Met wie ik altijd de kortste route naar huis loop
Die zorgt dat ik mijn sleutels niet tussen mijn knokkers klem
Die mij licht geeft in het donkere bos
Die mijn vrienden appt wanneer ik veilig thuis ben
Die de achterdeur voor me op slot doet
Die zich als ik slaap op de bank vlijt

En die alleen mannen bijt

Afraid of the dark
I wish I had a big, scary dog
One that would fit into my bag whenever I go out
That I could take out on my way home at night
With whom I always walk the shortest route home
With whom I never have to press my keys between my knuckles
Who lights my way through the dark forest
Who texts my friends when I get home safely
Who locks the back door behind me
Who curls up on the couch as I sleep

And who only bites men
